Leading Under Pressure
Remain thoughtful and intentional when situations become stressful, uncertain, or emotionally charged.
The More Effective Leader
Experienced leaders generally know what good leadership looks like. The challenge is consistently practicing it when facing pressure, difficult relationships, competing expectations, and organizational change.
The More Effective Leader is an eight-week online development experience that helps you recognize what’s limiting your effectiveness, change how you respond, and become more effective in the situations that challenge you most.

The leadership challenge
Most experienced leaders understand the importance of communication, accountability, sound judgment, and leading by example. But knowing what effective leadership looks like doesn’t mean we always practice it.
Pressure can make us reactive. Disagreement can make us defensive. Uncertainty can cause hesitation. And our desire to get things done can lead us to take responsibility for things that belong to others.
These situations reveal patterns in how we function as leaders.
The More Effective Leader helps you recognize those patterns and intentionally develop better ways of leading.
What you’ll become better at
Remain thoughtful and intentional when situations become stressful, uncertain, or emotionally charged.
Address conflict, provide feedback, and discuss performance concerns without becoming defensive or avoiding the issue.
Recognize when you’re taking on problems that belong to others, and help people take ownership of their work.
Make thoughtful decisions when expectations compete, information is incomplete, and the best course isn’t obvious.
Stay connected and constructive with employees, colleagues, and supervisors, even when disagreements arise.
Respond effectively to resistance, uncertainty, and changing expectations while helping others move forward.
A different approach
Traditional leadership development often focuses on introducing new concepts, models, and skills.
Those things have value. But understanding leadership and functioning effectively as a leader aren’t always the same.
The More Effective Leader emphasizes putting what you learn into practice. Each week, participants apply meaningful leadership concepts to real situations, examine their responses, and practice becoming more effective in how they lead.
How the eight weeks work
Join a focused weekly online lesson exploring how effective leaders think, respond, and function.
Put the week’s learning into practice through a real situation in your current leadership role.
Meet with a small peer cohort to discuss what you tried, what happened, and what you learned.
Identify what you did differently, the effect it had, and how you’ll continue improving.
There are no lengthy academic papers or assignments disconnected from your responsibilities. Your daily leadership work provides the opportunities to practice what you’re learning.
The curriculum
The program follows a deliberate progression: understand how you lead, practice functioning differently, apply those changes with others, and evaluate your progress.
Recognize the assumptions and patterns influencing how you lead.
Practice responding differently under pressure and sustaining your effectiveness.
Apply what you're learning to conversations, accountability, and change.
Identify what you're doing differently and establish a plan to sustain it.
Recognize how your assumptions, beliefs, and commitments influence your leadership behavior. Identify patterns in how you typically respond to difficult situations and where you want to become more effective.
Examine how your interpretation of circumstances influences your actions and results. Learn to recognize limiting perspectives and consider new ways of responding to familiar leadership challenges.
Develop the ability to remain thoughtful and intentional when facing tension, disagreement, and uncertainty. Practice maintaining your commitments without becoming reactive, defensive, or avoidant.
Recognize when your drive to achieve, tendency to overfunction, or habit of taking on too much responsibility begins to undermine your effectiveness. Identify changes that support healthier, more sustainable leadership.
Strengthen your ability to address difficult issues directly, give meaningful feedback, and maintain productive relationships even when conversations are uncomfortable.
Recognize the difference between taking responsibility for your leadership and assuming responsibility for everyone else's work. Learn to establish clear expectations, encourage ownership, and address accountability without constant intervention.
Develop the ability to lead constructively when circumstances shift, people resist, or expectations change. Practice engaging others while remaining clear about the outcomes you're committed to producing.
Evaluate how your leadership behavior has changed throughout the program. Identify what you're doing differently, assess its impact on your relationships and results, and establish a plan to sustain your progress.
Who it’s for
The More Effective Leader is designed for people who already carry responsibility for leading others.

The program serves leaders in government, business, nonprofit organizations, and other professional environments.
What participants leave with
